Igloo Community services to be terminated 28.6.2013

As the Snowball program is closing, so shall the Igloo Community services.

This includes everything under the the igloocommunity.org domain; wiki, forum, malinglists, git access, downloads…

Sites that are not under the igloocommunity.org domain are not (directly) affected (eg. Igloo Community on Launchpad).

The following data will be made available through other services:

The wiki contents will be partially imported to http://sandbox.movial.com wiki.

Some of the open git repositories will be pushed to https://github.com/igloocommunity/ organization.

We are also looking into getting the mailing lists archived on mailing list archive sites.

The shutdown will happen at 9:00 UTC on 28.6.2013.

Thanks for participating.

End of the line for igloocommunity.org

Here’s a message from Philippe Garnier of ST-Ericsson:

A small team of passionate ST-Ericsson people had a dream about the Snowball program. With the help and support of you and the rest of the community we all succeeded together to make the program prosper until today.

In December 2012, STMicroelectronics announced a new strategic plan, where they decided to exit the joint-venture with Ericsson. As a result, STMicrosystems and Ericsson agreed to split the JV ST-Ericsson between the entities. A decision was subsequently made by STMicrosystems to discontinue the Snowball program.

It is with big sadness we must announce the closure of igloocommunity.org and the loss of a European digital platform that aimed to catalyze and boot innovation projects in an open way. We would like to thank all of you that have shared our vision, believed in and contributed to this program. Two special recognitions, for CALAO Systems that made a deep investment into Snowball and for Movial that made the IGLOO Community a living reality. Of course, the Open Source spirit is surviving and we still have the chance to continue to collaborate and share in other places!

This means that the igloocommunity.org and all of its services will be going down in the near future (few weeks or a month). We will post notices of the exact date later.

However, this doesn’t mean all is completely lost. Linaro is still producing builds and the Igloo community launchpad site is still up, for how long I do not know though.

All the (relevant) open-source parts will be checked into a public git service in order to keep them accessible for all.

There are no plans to preserve mailinglist archives, the wiki or the forum, so if you think there is crucial information you don’t want lost, please feel free to copy them to some other place. However, please do note that the things behind the click-trhough license should still be behind a click-through license (mainly concerns the download area).

As this is only the shutdown of the “official” upkeeping of the community, echoing Philippe’s words I hope it can continue in another form elsewhere.

The details of the source code migration and eventual shutdown will be posted in the following weeks. Thanks to all participants of igloocommunity.org, it has been a fun adventure.

Sailfish OS and Snowball

Jolla announced their Sailfish OS at Slush. At the event Snowball was present in the Application SDK demonstration session, with a promise it will be a supported platform for Sailfish OS application development.

Sailfish OS is based on Mer and Nemo Mobile. Nemo Mobile UI was demonstrated on Snowball a while ago. You can read more about how to get started with Mer in our wiki.

There will be more details posted about using the Application SDK with Snowball later on the Community Projects page.

Old APT package repository removed

If you started to get 404 errors from igloocommunity.org when updating your package lists, chances are that you were still using the older package repository for tools (or on the device if you haven’t upgraded it in the last year or so).

That repository is now removed completely so head on to the launchpad page for snowball-tools for instructions to take the current repository into use.
